If HurtblockerTM flags a participant as ‘green light’
, then no further management is
required other
than education about ACL prevention programs and understanding that results may change over time
depending on factors such as fatigue, increased exercise load, deconditioning, etc.
If HurtblockerTM flags a participant as ‘red light’
then participant should participate in
a validated
neuromuscular training program (NMT) such as the FIFA11+ at least twice per week for 6 weeks.
It is recommended to avoid participation in cutting sports until the NMT is completed and a ‘green
light’
has been achieved at 6 weeks. If at 6 weeks,
upon retesting with HurtblockerTM,
the
participant is still flagged as ‘red light’
, then they should continue NMT for another 6
weeks
before retesting.
If at the completion of 12 weeks of NMT, the ‘green light’
low risk status is obtained, the
participant is cleared for return to full participation with recommendations to continue maintenance
NMT exercises. If the participant obtains a ‘red light’
again at the 12-week mark, they
should be
flagged as ‘yellow light’. This indicates that they may return to play with a strong recommendation
to continue to participate in NMT twice a week and at each pre-participation warm up. A ‘yellow
light’ label may be applied to the participant profile using the tag function for aid in tracking
multiple participants.
We recommend the SLH for screening as it is a validated test that allows for equipment free testing of participants with HurtblockerTM. Movement specialists may consider using the drop vertical jump (DVJ) function in a clinical setting if they have access to a 30cm high stable surface. This athletic stress test has been widely cited as a reliable exercise to evaluate lower extremity biomechanics. In the case of discordance between the results of the SLH and DVJ, the DVJ results should be favoured.
Remember to update the participant profile in the HurtblockerTM app to highlight any changes demographic or injury status. For example, the occurrence of an injury may render the participant ineligible to jump. Also, it is strongly recommended that a medical professional make the decision as to whether a participant has a condition that would prevent safe participation with the HurtblockerTM app.
